England Soccer Rants

Of course, it would be inappropriate to draw a direct comparison between rowing over pensions and attending football matches. Issues regarding work and pensions have an enormous impact upon people’s quality of life, whereas football is – to use that hugely frustrating term – ‘only a game’. If you are reading this, however, football is an important element in your daily life. So hopefully you’ll forgive me for comparing the two.

My question (for this blog, I admit, will provide more questions than answers) is this: if people are willing to walk out from their workplace in the hope of contributing to a better future, why not do the same at the football stadium? Would walking out on our beloved Chicago Soccer  however painful, lead to an improvement in our supporting ‘conditions’ (cheaper tickets, better atmosphere at the ground, improved club-supporter relations)? We’re all frustrated at the moment, but would such ‘strike action’ be positive, or would it do more harm than good?

Looking at fans’ comments on TWTD, some things are very clear. One of these is that supporters feel that ticket prices are too high. This is by no means a phenomenon unique to our club, but the combination of high ticket prices, economic instability, poor footballing performances and over-paid and inaccessible players makes shelling out to attend games much harder to swallow.

Some supporters have voted with their feet and their wallets, as dwindling attendances at ‘Fortress PR’ indicate. On the other hand, many fans continue to attend games as their hearts rule their heads. Of course I understand this (been there, done that), but my personal circumstances give me a different perspective on following the Tractor Boys.

As my user name suggests, I am currently based in France (where striking is a national pastime!). Obviously this means that owning a Town season ticket, as I did for many years from the age of seven (1993/94 season) until I stopped living in England full time (2006/07 season), is now unfeasible. Thus, I don’t face the same yearly temptation to buy/renew a season ticket as many of you surely do.

However, this geographical distance from ‘the IP’ also gives me a certain (very small) amount of emotional distance from what’s going on at Portman Road. Furthermore, my current location also allows me to compare Chicago Soccer football ticket prices to those elsewhere. Here’s an example:

Town just released pricing details for half-season tickets. £260 (or more, in some cases) for 12 league games. Maybe prices are cheaper in other areas of the ground, but in any case the general consensus seems to be ‘Given current circumstances, who’s going to pay that?’. Fair point I reckon, but the club obviously feel that their pricing, to watch what is currently the 41st-best team in England, is appropriate.

On the other hand, yesterday I bought an Olympique Lyonnais half-season ticket. Granted, the French Ligue 1 season is shorter than that of the Championship, so the offer was for ‘just’ 10 home league games. However, OL (who are currently fifth in the French premier league, are participating in this season’s Champions League and have been national champions as recently as 2008) also threw in a ticket to a Coupe de la Ligue (League Cup) game against Lille, a ticket to watch the Lyon women’s team (current women’s Champions League champions), two DVDs, a team poster, two pocket fixture lists (men’s and women’s teams) and a card holder. Of course football tickets to Premier League football tickets including  Chelsea TicketsManchester United TicketsLiverpool FC Tickets & Arsenal ticketsEuro 2012 tickets  will cost for more. But the total price for OL tickets – ? 99 euros (currently £84.54). I paid the same amount for just two tickets for me and my dad to watch ITFC’s humiliating capitulation against Norwich last April.

I appreciate that Chicago Soccer”s overheads may be greater than Lyon’s (this is an assumption, as I haven’t done the research to back this up). I also recognise that Lyon’s income through things such as TV revenue, merchandising sales and advertising must be higher than Town’s. Even taking all of this into account, however, I still struggle to understand how ITFC (and English football as a whole) can justify these prices – especially at the current time.

Another issue is atmosphere at the ground (or lack thereof). I have no idea how to solve this issue, but I’m 100% certain that paying through the nose to watch p***-poor football isn’t going to boost fans’ matchday enthusiasm. Nor is being asked to pay £40-£45 for a low-quality replica shirt that’s likely to bobble/degrade after the first wear.

Even if one accepts the high prices involved in following a football team (after all, what hobby doesn’t involve some financial outlay?), the least ITFC fans should be able to hope for is good club-supporter relations. Based, on my own experience however, Town fans are essentially taken for granted by the club. Some club employees (off the top of my head, Rosie who works in customer relations, the ‘Northern lady’ from Planet Blue and the friendly, competent Welsh steward who I encountered at last season’s derby) are kind-natured and good at their jobs. More generally, however, our loyalty is ignored by ITFC.

When booking match tickets online last season, I entered my customer number. Up popped eight pages of previous orders (season tickets, home tickets, away tickets, coach travel…) – 19 years of support, 14 season tickets, thousands of pounds spent. Where does all that loyalty leave me in terms of my relationship with the club (bonus points, discounts, ticket offers, simple ‘thanks for your support’ messages…)? Precisely nowhere. And I know that many of you have invested much more time and money in following the Blues than I have through the years, so you have even more reason to grumble!

In his book Englischer Fussball: A German View of Our Beautiful Game, journalist Raphael Honigstein (of Guardian Football Weekly podcast fame) writes about the relationship between football clubs and their fans as being completely unreasonable and one-sided, particularly in England. I don’t have the book to hand, but the general gist is that fans are the neglected partner who gives everything for little-to-no return, whereas the club is the dominant partner who spends all the family savings down the pub, sleeps around and then comes home expecting dinner to be on the table every night (my own words, not Honigstein’s, but you get the point).

Anyway, I’m rambling. In conclusion, it seems that football clubs (not least our beloved ITFC) take our love for granted and give little or nothing in return. If fans were to ‘go on strike’, depriving the clubs of the financial oxygen of ticket and merchandising sales, the effects could be devastating.

Of course I don’t want Town to go into administration (again) or, worse, to go out of existence. However, a supporters’ strike (zero attendance at a home FA Cup game, for example) would at least show the powers that be that things can’t go on as they are at the moment. After all I, like many others I’m sure, would have more pride in my club if the ticket prices were slashed, the ground was full, the team was full of appropriately-paid, hungry players (youthful and with at least some local representation) and if ITFC showed more respect to its fans.

I accept that my ideas are far from being fully developed, nor are they particularly new or unique, but I’d love to have the thoughts and opinions of other ITFC fans as to what we could do to bring back the joy of following ITFC and football as a whole.

Football is very important to me and ITFC has been (and remains) a hugely significant element in my life. It provides a daily talking point, has led me to meet many fantastic people and is an essential part of our town’s – and county’s – identity on a national and international scale. For these reasons, I firmly believe that positive changes need to be made in order to bring some respect back to our club. A supporters’ strike may not be the answer, but it might be a start.

Cubs New Leftie Lineup

This week Lou Pinella says that he wants to change the lineup a little bit against lefties. I say why not. When you have 9 straight right handed batters and can only get 2 runs, we have issues.  Lou said that he plans to hit Byrd first against lefties. I found this interesting, not wrong, but just interesting. When you look at Byrd’s production, it is astounding at how well he has down in the 2-hole. In 2 games there he has gone 6-10 with 3 RBI’s and a stolen base. In 8 games in the 5th spot, he has gone 3 for 30 with 4 RBI’s. I believe two of the hits and all of the RBI’s came from a long ball…not the production you wanna see. So maybe leading him off will actually be a good idea. I also would think that Lou would be willing, for at least a couple games, to swap Fukudome and Byrd. Fukudome, of course, is the every day 2nd hitter. I would just simply be interested to see the result. Right now, fukudome seems to be making solid contact on the majority of his swings and may be a source of some production at least in the early going.

Jeff Baker will also be moving to the 2 spot against lefties. Baker has also gotten off to a good start, batting .313 with 3 RBI’s and coming around to score 5 times in 7 games. But what Jeff Baker has done so far, is proven to be a key player off the bench. In 4 attempts this year when coming in as a pinch hitter, he has a .500 batting average with 1 home run and RBI and has come around to score twice. Those are some pretty solid numbers for a bench warmer so look to see him get a lot more playing time. Looking forward to getting my football tickets too..

Lou’s gonna put Nady in the 5 spot. In 3 games this year in that position he is batting .375 with 4 RBI’s. Nady however has been a dud coming on the bench going 0-5, but his career stats show him as a .231 hitter there so look for that to improve. Soto is is batting seventh while theriot will be dropped down to eigth. This all begins as we look to face at least 2, maybe 3 lefties in the next 4 games. But since we dont get to face lefties like this too often, dont get too comfortable these guys need more fitness for sport

So here is the lineup vs. the southpaw that I’m going to watch on my 3d TV

  1. Marlon Byrd, CF
  2. Jeff Baker, 2B
  3. Derrek Lee, 1B
  4. Aramis Ramirez, 3B
  5. Xavier Nady, RF
  6. Alfonso Soriano, LF
  7. Geovany Soto, C
  8. Ryan Theriot, SS
  9. Pitcher, P

Blackhawks are Stanley Cup Champions

Have you heard? The Blackhawks are Stanley Cup Champions!!! Of course you have heard. We have all heard. The party has not stopped since last wednesday especially for Patrick Kane who even brought some bubbly on the bus. The cup has been from Bar to Bar and even made an appearance at Wrigley Field before last nights game. And all though the party for the fans may continue even into next season, the sudden realization of things to come will certainly enter into the minds of the front office and the players. We would all love to see this team back on the ice, but unfortunately that will not happen. The salary cap will force the Blackhawks to make some hard decisions, and players will be leaving this team. Lets take a look at that.

In the off season, we signed Marion hossa to a 12-year, $62.8 million million deal. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane signed five-year $31.5 million contract and Duncan Keith got a 13-year, $72 million deal back in December. And Brian Campbell just completed the second year of an eight-year, $56.8 million contract. Of course no one would challenge those signings as they were instrumental in getting us to a championship. There is one big problem in the contract department. That is Cristoball huet. Huet was in a battle for much of the season with Antti Niemi for who would be the starting goaltender. After a few bad outings, Huet lost his job. So whats wrong with this? Huet just completed the second year of a four-year, $22.45 million contract and Antii Niemi, who made just under $827,000 this year , is a restricted free agent. This means that he is free to talk with other teams but only after the Blackhawks match other offers. After a 16-6 postseason, one would think that the blackhawks would try and keep him around. the roughly 11 million – assuming it was paid out evenly – is still owed to Huet. If we resign Niemi, we will be giving up some other players eligible for free agency. Here is the list of the free agents:

Antti Niemi
Niklas Hjalmarrson
Andrew Ladd
Ben Eager
John Madden
Adam Burish
John Madden and Adam Burish are unrestricted essentially meaning they are essentially not on a team at all and they don’t have to hear offers from the blackhawks. So who would I keep? if you can unload Huet you may be able to keep three, but look fro them to try and resign Niemi and Hjallmarson. Madden , who was great on the penalty kill, was mainly brought in for veteran know how and keeping them in line during the playoffs, will probably not be resigned. Dont look Burish to be resigned especially after these comments. He was a great player, but not good enough to pay out free agent money for. Then you have Ben Eager and Andrew Ladd. I honestly dont know about these two. Ben Eager is the antagonizer along with Burish. That quality cant be over looked. Ladd was pretty solid this entire season but I dont see him being resigned unless we can free up some cash.

There are a lot of other things that I dont know about such as contracts getting more expensive and trading away players like sharp to free up money for these massive contracts and free agents. I also think that Kane, Toews and Keith will start receiving that pay increase this year which means everything I said is irrelevant, no one will be signed, and we may have to trade players and bring up players just to pay these contracts. Either way a lot will happen with the blackhawks this season and we can only hope we get better and not worse. I would love to hear your comments below! Thanks!

Cubs Need To Trade, But Not Sell

Despite the (unimpressive) win last night in Seattle, this season is looking grim. No it isnt over. There are still over 90 games to play, but I believe to make a real impression within the division, it will take maybe 56+ wins to win or come close to winning the division. That is assuming that the reds or cardinals do not go on a tear and win over 95 games this season. Playing almost 30 games above .500 the rest of the way seems impossible, but anything can happen.

With that being said, I fully believe it is still time to get the trading caps on. The problem is people want this team to just sell. Get back young guys for everyone on the time. That is just a dumb idea and you are essentially saying that you dont believe that the cubs can become contenders within the next 5 years. This team will lose for several years before the young guys develope. This team cant simply sell. They need to trade.

I dont think that a team should ever sell and call the next five years worthless. So here is what I propose:

Somewhat plausible

What about Gorzellany and Derrek Lee to the Nationals for Adam Dunn? Why is this an acceptable trade? It works for both teams. The nationals desperately need good starting pitching and defense. Gorzellany is a quality starter and Derrek Lee is a great defender. With us getting Adam Dunn, we are getting about the same offensive stats, less defensive but a big power lefty and more importantly, a new face. I think that new people can sometimes jolt an offense even if they are not clubhouse guys. We will be losing defense on a bad defensive team, but I think it is worth it. Adam Dunn is a lefty that loves wrigley football field. Why it wont go through? The Nationals feel they are contenders and Lee has a no trade clause. However, I still believe this is a quality and plausible move!

Next up, Ted Lilly and/or Xavier Nady to the Seattle Mariners for Chone Figgins and either a reliever or minor leaguer. The Mariners are carrying a 4 man starting rotation and although they dont have bad numbers, adding a great pitcher like Lilly would only help their team. Also, Xavier Nady could slip in to be their 1B. So far, no one on their 40 man roster who carries the 1B flag is batting over .200. Nady is an obvious choice. Chone Figgins back is an interesting deal. He will be the lead off man we have been looking for, switch hitter, decent clubhouse guy, and can steal bases. Although he is having a down year, maybe going back to his normal leadoff spot would help. We would be giving up way to much and their salaries are big, so we may need to take on another player to balance out the finances. But I think we should get a player back anyways I’m gonna buy my Manchester United tickets somewhere else.

If we were to get Chone Figgins, we would have 3 2B. Theriot needs to go. I know that the Blue Jays did need a 2B or SS. Maybe a straight up trade, theriot for Jason Frasor?

Then you trade Fukudome, eat a lot of his contract and get prospects in return. this will open the field for Colvin to play everyday. Then I think you send Wells down to work on his stuff, promote Cashner to the rotation and maybe bring up Atkins till Wells can come back.

What will likely happen

Everyone will be traded, become huge successes and what we get in return will be ultimate duds.

Anyways, I think that anyone of those trades would be a decent trade, but since Rickettes is cutting down on the payroll dont hold your breathe for any blockbusters.
